Puhdys - Alt wie ein Baum

Puhdys, formed in 1969, are one of the most well-known rock bands (and best, might I add) from East Germany. Ostrock (lit. East rock) is the term given to East German rockbands. Alt wie ein Baum (old like a tree) is relaxing and folky. The lyrics are not short and uncomplicated -- one with little German knowledge could memorize them easily by singing along a few times.

Wortschätze zu memorieren
bezwingen (bezwang, bezwungen) - to defeat, to conquer
beschreiben (beschrieb, beschrieben) - to describe
einfangen (fing ein, eingefangen) - to catch, to capture, to trap
möchten - would like to
werden (wurde, geworden) - to become
zeigen (zeigte, gezeigt) - to display, to face

der Baum, Bäume - tree
der Dichter, Dichter - poet
die Erde, Erden - earth, world, land, soil
das Feld, Felder - field
der Himmel, Himmel - sky, heaven
das Jahr, Jahre - year
die Krone, Kronen - crown
der Schatten, Schatten - shadow, shade
der Traum, Träume - dream
die Wurzel, Wurzeln - root

alt - old
weit - far
kühlend - cooling, chilling

genau - exactly (adverb)
nie - never (adverb)
zwischen - between (preposition)

Wertvolle Sätze
Alt wie ein Baum möchte ich werden, genau wie der Dichter es beschreibt.
German word order: Old like a tree would I like to become, exactly like the poet it describes.
English word order: I would like to become old like a tree, exactly like the poet describes it.

Alle meine Träume fange ich damit ein.
I catch all my dreams therewith (with it).

... zwischen Himmel und Erde zu sein.
... to be between sky and earth.

Der Baum bringt kühlende Schatten.
The tree brings cooling shade.
